Sites Around Townsville
From coast
to outer reef, between 18°00’S and 20°00’S
This
database is intended as a resource for recreational divers who wish to
dive around Townsville. The information it contains has been passed on
from fellow divers. I haven’t personally dived every site and cannot guarantee
the accuracy of this information. It should go without saying that only
suitably qualified divers and boaties should be out exploring the underwater
world. Take care of yourselves and the environment and have fun.
I
welcome any further information or dive reports on included dive sites
and would love to receive details of new sites. Obviously I would like
the information to be as comprehensive as possible, but am happy to receive
anything – including ‘rumours’ of lost wrecks that others may be able to
shed more light on.

In an
ideal world the following information would be provided for each dive site:
NAME
COORDINATES–
and how these were derived (GPS or chart). See note below.
DEPTH
RANGE –
and how this was determined (dive log or chart).

GPS COORDINATESare
obviously pretty useful for finding some dive sites. Tobe sufficiently
accurate for finding a wreck or coral bommie a set of coordinates should
be quoted along with the map datum used. If one map datum was used for
obtaining coordinates and a second is set on a GPS unit for locating them,
a positioning error of over 1km can be introduced! A good default map datum
to use is WGS 84. I will try to specify the map datum used for each set
of coordinates quoted in this database.
