Andrew's War in the Pacific Map version 6.2 - Version Changes

< Previous Contents Next >

The following changes have been made to the map and converted scenarios:

Version 6.2

Released June 2006.

Version 6.2 includes the following changes and additions:

Fixes:
  1. Graphical faults near Cairns, Australia, cleaned up.

Version 6.1

Released May 2006.

Version 6.1 includes the following changes and additions:

Fixes:
  1. Garbled text for "Christmas Island IO" fixed.
Changes:
  1. Calcutta hex (29,23) changed to a coastal hex, allowing it to be used as a port in suitably converted scenarios.

Version 6.0

Released April 2006.

Version 6.1 includes the following changes and additions:

Changes:
  1. Padang, on Sumatra, has been "moved" to a more correct location (hex 18,50).
  2. A missing railway on Sumatra, travelling one hex inland from Padang, has been added. This railway was used to transport coal from inland mines. This is a low capacity railway (represented by a road in the map data). The presence of these mines is represented by the addition of a new base, Sawahloento, in hex 19,50.
  3. Most of the trail between Padang and Medan, along the West coast of Sumatra, has been removed.
  4. Samah (hex 37,41), on the island of Hainan, is not rugged enough to be a mountain hex, so it has been changed to "forest".
  5. Takao (hex 47,45), on the island of Formosa, is not rugged enough to be a mountain hex. so it has been changed to cultivated (clear).
  6. Parts of Eastern China, between Canton and Shanghai, have been changed to forest terrain to represent the ruggedness of the terrain in this area. Several trails have also been added here.
  7. A few more clear hexes in Eastern China have been converted to cultivated hexes.
  8. Hex 53,33, in Northeastern China, is now a forest hex.
  9. A new Soviet port, Nikolaevsk, has been added in hex 76,26, at the mouth of the Amur river.
  10. An "oil pipeline" has been added between Nikolaevsk and Komsomolsk. This pipeline is represented in the map data as a  road. Oil from the base of Okha, on Sakhalin Island, will move to the adjacent port of Nikolaevsk, thence along the "pipeline" to Komsomolsk, from which it can be transported to other Soviet bases. This oil will be used by the Soviet bases with HI to generate supply points, although with some losses of oil during the transfer process. This will also prevent oil points from building up endlessly at the Okha base.
  11. Two islands have been added in the Pacific, as part of the Cook Islands - Aitutaki (102,126) and Penhryn Island (111,114).
  12. The railway between Skagway and Whitehorse has been downgraded to a "low capacity" railway (road).
  13. the road inland from Bandjermasin (hex 27,64), on Borneo, has been downgraded from road to trail.
  14. Lamon Bay (hex 44,52) is now connected to hex 43,53 by trail.
  15. The rivers on the East coast of Sumatra have been aligned more accurately.
  16. The text used for the base text has been cleaned up a little and is also now more subdued.

Version 5.1

Released February 2006.

Version 5.1 includes the following changes and additions:

Changes:
  1. The "path" of the Yangtse river up to Nanking has been modified so that Soochow can be retained as a port.
  2. The port value of Nanking has been increased slightly and that of Soochow decreased slightly.
  3. A few minor map graphics corrections have been made.

Version 5

Released January 2006.

Version 5 includes the following changes and additions:

Changes:
  1. The map has been redrawn in a new style, with softer boundaries between the land and sea, and between shallow and deep water.
  2. Okayama base in Japan now remains at Okayama (62,41), with Maizuru being merged with Kyoto (63,41). This base - Maizuru/Kyoto - is now a major port. This base revision also means that the Japanese  coastline in the area has been "remodelled": Oyama now adjoins the Inland Sea.
  3. Ichang (47,34) is now connected by trail to Changsha (45,37) - it was not able to be supplied when owned by the Allied side in previous map versions.
  4. A trail now connects Hankow (48,35) and Anking (49,37).
  5. The Yangtse River in China is now navigable as far as Nanking (51,37). In addition, the road joining Soochow (52,38) with the hex to the Northeast (52,37) has been removed, as there were no bridges across the Yangste River below Nanking.
  6. The trail between Port Moresby and Lae has been removed.
  7. The trails near Lae have been modified to allow for the addition of Wau (55,90).
  8. Several base names have been changed on the map. See scenario notes for details.
  9. The malaria zone borders have been modified to match the modifications made to the zone in patch 1.7+.
  10. Hex 135,39 on the Olympic Peninsula, West of Seattle, has been made a mountain hex.

Version 4

Released September 2005.

Version 4 is a repackaged version, with the scenario files removed. This is because it was too difficult to continually update the very large map package every time a scenario was updated. Scenarios must now be downloaded and installed separately. Because the scenarios have been removed, the version number has been changed to 4, to represent the map only, which has not been updated since 4.0.

For scenario update information, please see the documentation provided with the scenarios themselves.

Version 4.03

Released September 2005.

Version 4.03 includes the following fixes, changes and additions:

Fixes:
  1. Takao base was accidentally moved to hex 48,44 instead of hex 47,45 - Fixed.
  2. The merged Takao/Tainan base accidentally had its manpower, resources and heavy industry removed - Fixed.
  3. Noumea port and airfield SPS both raised to 4. Also, 1 Manpower and 20 Resources added.

Version 4.01

Released August 2005.

Version 4.01 includes the following fixes, changes and additions:

Fixes:
  1. Patna base was placed in the wrong hex - 32,16 instead of 30,19 for scenarios 115 and 116 - Fixed.
  2. During the revision of the Indian industry and resources, the shipyards in India were accidentally removed - Fixed.

Version 4

Released August 2005.

Version 4 includes the following fixes, changes and additions:

Fixes:
  1. There is now a river between Singapore and Johore Bahru
  2. The reef hexside immediately to the West of Palau was not represented in the map data. Fixed.
Changes:
  1. The ocean and river colours have been changed in this version. The Ocean colours are inspired by (read copied from) the colours used by "Subchaser" for his excellent War in the Pacific map.
  2. Coastal swamp hexes can not now be used for the landing or picking up of ground forces, unless the hex contains a base. This has been achieved by converting these hexes to land or ocean hexes, depending on the nearby terrain.
  3. A new transport link type has been introduced on this version of the map - low capacity rail. This is simply road, but drawn differently, to represent those railways, narrow gauge or otherwise, that could not handle large volumes of traffic. Most of the rail lines in China have been downgraded to this type of "railway" except for the main lines linking Shanghai, Tsingtao, Peking, Tientsin, Harbin and Seoul, as well as the connection between Canton and Hong Kong.
  4. Apart from China, a few other rail lines, which were narrow gauge and/or low capacity lines, have been "downgraded" to "Secondary" rail lines. The most significant of these is the central railway in Malaya, running South from Kota Bharu.
  5. The transport network in India has been modified. The rail link from Raipur North through the forest hexes has been downgraded to a "Secondary" line and truncated. A smal number of new rail lines have also been added in India due to the addition of several new bases.
  6. Significant changes have been made to the terrain in China. A few specific changes are listed here, but there are many more.
  7. The coastal road in China, between Swatow and Wenchow, has been removed.
  8. Several roads in Northern China, near Lanchow, Tatung and Yenan, have been downgraded to trails.
  9. Chungking is now - correctly - on the Northwest side of the Yangtze river.
  10. Chungking and Chengtu are now connected by road instead of trail.
  11. The terrain between Chungking and Chengtu is now cultivated instead of forest.
  12. The transport link in the single hex (43,31) to the Northeast of Chungking has been converted from trail to road.
  13. Sian is now - correctly - on the South side of the Hwang Ho river.
  14. The base of Linfen (50,30), controlled by the Chinese at the start of the campaign game, has been replaced with the base of Yangku (51,29), controlled by the Japanese.
  15. The railway between Yangku and Sian no longer crosses the Hwang Ho river.
  16. The hex containing Hong Kong (43,42) has been converted from clear to mountain terrain. Also the river that I added to Hong Kong in the previous map revision has been removed again. This should (hopefully) provide the right balance to the effectiveness of the Hong Kong defence.
  17. The transport link in the hex containing the base of Rahaeng in Siam (31,36) has been converted from trail to road. This should make it a bit quicker for Japanese units to march to/from Burma.
  18. The transport link in the hex formerly containing the base of Takao in Formosa (47,46) has been downgraded from road to trail.
  19. A number of base names in the Dutch East Indies have been changed:
    • Bula -> Boela
    • Banjarmasin -> Bandjermasin
    • Macassar -> Makassar
  20. The road between Bandjermasin and Balikpapan has been truncated, so that these two bases are no longer connected.
  21. Moulmein is now - correctly - on the South side of the Salween river.
  22. The base of Yanam (21,21) in India has been replaced by the base of Vizagapatam (22,21).
  23. The base of Chandpur (31,25) has been renamed Chittagong, which was a much more important port.
  24. Dacca has "moved" from hex 32,24 to hex 31,23, which places it a more correct distance from Calcutta. This also improves the correct placement of Chittagong. The mouths of the Brahmaputra river have also been adjusted to suit.
  25. The transport link in the hex containing Kuantan (24,48) in Malaya has been upgraded from trail to road.
  26. Saigon (31,45) has been changed from urban to clear terrain.
  27. The trail between Cooktown (48,100) and Cairns (48,102) in Northern Australia has been upgraded to a road. In addition the hex to the Northwest of Cooktown (47,99) has also been upgraded from trail to road.
Additions:
  1. A number of new base locations have been added in India: Poona (19,12), Cuttack (27,22), Agra (28,11), Cawnpore (28,23), Mangalore (14,17), Jaipur (26,9), Madurai (13,21) and Patna (30,19).
  2. The dot base of Portland Roads (49,94) has been added to far Northeast Australia.
  3. All Indian bases have had their manpower, heavy industry and resource vaules modified and recalculated. The manpower values in particular were not very accurate previously.
  4. An atoll has been added in the location of Male, in the Maldives (5,22), to provide the option of adding a base here.
  5. A trail now links the Lamon Bay and Manila hexes in the Philippines.
  6. A trail now links the base locations of Coen (47,96) and Portland Roads (49,94) in the far North of Australia.
  7. A new base location has been added for Skagway in Alaska (122,28), and the railway between Whilehorse and Juneau now terminates here.
  8. A new base location has been added for Whittier, in Alaska (114,28) and a railway connects this hex to Anchorage.
  9. In the converted scenarios, a new base is added in Australia - Katherine (35,87). This base helps to represent the very large number of airfields that were built in the area around Darwin during the war.
  10. In the converted scenarios, a new base is added in Canada, at the Western tip of Vancouver Island, Port Alice. This base was used by naval search aircraft, filling a gap between Vancouver/Victoria and Prince Rupert.
  11. The North Borneo Railway has been added. it is a small, low capacity line (represented as road in the map data) on the South China Sea coast of Sabah.

Version 3b

Released March 2005.

Version 3b includes the following fixes, changes and additions:

Fixes:
  1. The "Burma Railway" was changed from a railway to a track on the map, but the map data was not changed. This has now been fixed so that the link really is a trail.
  2. The trail between Chungking and hex 47,28 (near Kungchang and Sian) was wrongly represented as a road in the map data. The map data has been corrected from road to trail.
  3. Pagan in the Marianas had its name changed to Meiktila, as well as the Pagan in Burma, due to an overenthusiastic scenario conversion script. The proper name has been restored.
  4. The Soviet base name "Ohka - Sakalin" has been changed to "Ohka".
  5. The base name "Waigeu Island" in Dutch New Guinea has been changed to "Waigeo Island".
  6. The "ModSelect" utility may not work properly on Windows 95, 98 and Millenium Edition operating systems. The utility has been revised to ensure that it works OK on those systems.

Version 3

Released March 2005.

Version 3 includes the following fixes, changes and additions:

Fixes:
  1. The hex types for the Irkutsk (hex 59,12) and Ulan-Ude (hex 59,13) in the Soviet Union have been changed from Coastal to Land to prevent the AI from trying to use the bases as destinations for naval task forces.
Changes:
  1. Christmas Island (IO) (hex 15,62) has been changed from Atoll terrain to Jungle terrain. This island has an area of about 100 square kilometres.
  2. Canton in China (hex 43,41) had been made a coastal location so that it can be used as a port. It is open to the sea to the West.
  3. The road in the hex adjacent to Victoria Point in Burma (hex 25,40) was causing a lot of confusion. It was not supposed to connect to Victoria Point as several people supposed, but it was not of any use in the game either, so it has been removed.
  4. The transport link between Khota Baru (hex 24,45) and Kuantan (hex 24,48) has been downgraded from a Road to a Trail, as the transport links on the East coast of Malaya were poor.
  5. There was no road between Kuantan (hex 24,48) and Mersing (hex 23,50), so the road between these two hexes along the Eastern coast of Malaya has been removed.
  6. The "Burma Railway", which spans the hexes between 29,35 and 29,38 has been downgraded from rail/highwway to a track. This line was not built until late in the war and was a low-capacity line.
  7. The transport link in Rahaeng (hex 31,36) has been downgraded from road to track.
  8. The transort link at Fort St. John in Canada (hex 131,27) has been changed from Railway to Road, as the railway did not reach all the way to Fort St. John.
  9. Hex 44,60, Northeast of Davao, has been changed from a coastal hex to a land hex.
  10. The port values for Noumea (hex 66,117) have been reduced to more realistic levels.
  11. The map art at Nome in Alaska (hex 104,23) has been adjusted to make it look less like Nome is floating in the sea.
Additions:
  1. The Malaria zone has been made visible by adding a border around it, including around bases that are within the zone area but are Malaria free, such as Saigon, Manila and Singapore. The border is drawn in the same style as the weather area borders, but using yellow instead of blue.

Version 2

Released January 2005.

Version 2 includes the following fixes, changes and additions:

Fixes:
  1. Chandpur (hex 31,25) in India was defined as a Land hex, making it impossible for naval task forces to travel there. Fixed by making it a coastal hex.
  2. Clark Field (hex 43,51) in the Philippines was defined as a coastal hex, with the ability for naval task forces to travel there via Bataan. Fixed by making the hex a Land hex and specifying all bordering hexsides as Land only hexsides. This now matches the way that the Clark Field hex is defined on the official map.
  3. Tabar (hex 63,88) was defined as a deep ocean hex, and the base was not moved from its position on the official map, making the base unuseable. The hex has now been drawn in and defined as an Atoll, and the base has been moved to its correct place (basically, this base was missed completely).
  4. Some hexsides in Manchukuo were defined as Ocean hexsides instead of Land hexsids as they should have been. Fixed.
  5. Hex 21,14 in India had railway/highway defined as its transport link type instead of trail (for a cultivated hex). Fixed.
  6. Hex 63,43 in Japan had a railway/highway defined as its transport link type, but the hex was drawn as containing trails. The map art was changed from trails to railway/highway to match the map data.
  7. Okinawa hexes were defined as clear instead of mountains, as in the official map. Fixed.
  8. The railway to Darwin, in Australia (hex 36,84), did not extend into Darwin itself. Fixed
  9. The Deboyne Island base (hex 59,98) was not in its correct location. Fixed.
  10. Numerous minor fixes to hexsides and transport links.
Changes:
  1. The terrain type for Dacca (hex 32,24) in India has been changed from urban to cultivated (clear). Although it is heavily populated today it was MUCH smaller at the time of World War Two. In addition it is now flanked by rivers on five hexsides.
  2. Palk Strait, between Southern India and Ceylon, has been made impassable to Naval units. This shallow and treacherous strait is only navigable by small boats.
  3. Fort St. John in Canada (hex 131,27) has been moved one hex to the Northwest to place it on the correct side of the river, and to even out the distances on the air route that was used for ferrying aircraft to Alaska and the USSR.
  4. The Snake River in the USA was changed to a more correct alignment to make the inclusion of Boise easier.
  5. The amount of heavy industry and resources in Auckland, New Zealand, which were added in version 1, have been reduced considerably.
  6. The Coastal Defence units in Canada that were added in Version 1 have been reworked to make them more accurate. The CD forces in Vancouver were also adjusted to more realistic levels (they were massively overpowered).
Additions:
  1. The base Rangpur has been added four hexes inland from Calcutta. This part of India had no bases, while there are quite a few defined along the coast in the Dacca-Calcutta area.
  2. A trail has been added from Imphal (hex 34,26) to meet the railway at hex 34,24.
  3. A beach base has been added to Ramree Island (hex 29,29) near Akyab.
  4. A river has been added between Hong Kong (hex 43,42) and the rest of China. This "river" is intended to simulate the difficulty of moving into the region of Hong Kong and Hong Kong island.
  5. Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean (hex 15,62), near Java, has been added. It is an undeveloped Australian base at the start of the war. If this base causes too many problems with gameplay it will be removed in a future update.
  6. The base Boise (hex 143,40) has been added in the United States.
  7. The base Sacramento (hex 143,48) has been added in the United States. The railway/highway routes in the area were also adjusted. This base provides a backup location, reflecting real-life capability, in the unlikely event that San Francisco is attacked by the Japanese.

Version 1

Released December 2004.
