War in the Pacific LCU Movement Mod version 6 --------------------------------------------- by Andrew Brown, 15th June 2005. PLEASE READ THIS FILE BEFORE TRYING TO USE THIS MOD! There are four map data files included with this mod: - File "Pwhex_LCU_MOD_v6.dat" contains the LCU movement mod fix, as explained in this readme, as well as all of the map data fixes that are specified below. - File "Pwhex_OFFICIAL_FIXED_v6.dat" contains all of the map fixes that are specified in this readme file (see below), but it does NOT include the LCU movement mod fix. This file is included for those that want to have the map fixes but do NOT want the LCU mod fix as well. - File "Pwhex_OFFICIAL_1.5.dat" is a copy of the official map data file from version 1.5 of the game. This file is included just in case you do not have a backup of the original file and you want to restore it without having to reinstall the game. - File "Pwhex_SUBCHASER_v6.dat" is specially designed to be used with Subchaser's map mod. This file contains many of the fixes that are in the "Pwhex_OFFICIAL_FIXED_v6.dat", but not all of them. Subchaser made some corrections to his map to fix some of the discrepancies between the map and the map data, whereas I originally made changes to the map data to make it more like the original game map. In this file I have reversed some of these changes - the ones that Subchaser made to the map - so that this file will match his map exactly. If using Subchaser's map, it is also fine to use one of the other files, but there will be a few map inconsistencies - although less than if using the original map data file with the original map (yes, true!). These map data files are intended to be used with version 1.5 of the game, but they should also work with earlier versions as well. This mod does not come with any installer. It must be installed manually, which requires at least a reasonable knowledge of how to navigate around the various folders on a PC, and how to copy and rename files. If you are not comfortable doing this, consider not trying this mod until such time as I provide an installer for it. Below is a description of the changes that I have made to the map data file. Description ----------- The major change is a modification to the way the presence of rail/road/trail links between hexes are represented. The change is intended to prevent the 'bug' which allows LCUs to move from a hex containing rail/road/trails, to a hex that does not, at a fast movement rate - as if the rail/road/trail DID join the two hexes. In addition to this change, I have added a number of fixes to correct some apparent map problems that I have found, or have been reported by other players in the Matrix WitP forums. I have made some basic tests using this file and it seems to work OK. Others have now been using it for a while and have not encountered any problems. However, please remember that this to be an unofficial mod. Remove it if it seems to be causing any problems. This mod should be able to be used for existing games, but it is possible that strange things may happen as a result. It will probably work OK, and I have yet to hear of anyone having problems as a result of using this mod. If problems DO occur they may only be temporary, or it may be necessary, in the worst case, to restart the game. I have included a version of the map data file that includes all of the map data fixes, but NOT the LCU movement fix, in case you want to use the map data fixes but do not want to also use the LCU movement fix. Note: This mod should NOT be used for PBEM play unless BOTH players use it. Furthermore, both players must use the SAME map data file from the different choices I make available in this mod. Also note: If you are using my WitP map (alternative game map), then this mod is NOT REQUIRED. In fact it must NOT be installed together with my map as they are NOT COMPATIBLE. My map already includes the LCU movement fix in its own map data file. This mod is for use with the official game map only. Please provide any feedback - good or bad, to user "Andrew Brown" at the Matrix forums. Thanks, Andrew Brown Installation ------------ To make use of the modified file, follow these steps: 1) Ensure that War in the Pacific is NOT running. 2) Unzip the contents of the zip file. This can be done anywhere, including in the folder where War in the Pacific is installed. 3) If not unzipped into the War in the Pacific folder, copy the contents of the zip file to the folder where War in the Pacific is installed. On most PCs this will probably be in the default location which I think is: "C:\Program Files\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific". 4) Make a backup copy of the official map data file. This can be done using Windows Explorer, or in a command window using a command such as: copy Pwhex.dat Pwhex_ORIGINAL.dat 5) Overwrite the map data file by copying one of the three included map data files. Again this can be done using Windows Explorer, or in a command window. For example, if you want to use the map data file that includes the LCU movement fix, then use the command: copy Pwhex_LCU_MOD_v6.dat Pwhex.dat If you only want to use the file with the map data fixes and NOT the LCU movement fix, then use the command: copy Pwhex_OFFICIAL_FIXED_v6.dat Pwhex.dat 6) Start War in the Pacific. Uninstalling the Mod -------------------- If you wish to return to using the official file, then overwrite Pwhex.dat with the backup of the original file. In a command window this would be done with a command such as: copy Pwhex_ORIGINAL.dat Pwhex.dat If the backup you made is lost, then you can use the backup of the official map data file I have included in this zip file, as follows: copy Pwhex_OFFICIAL_1.5.dat Pwhex.dat After restoring the original file, restart the game. Note that it is possible to swap different map data files in and out if using different files for different games. Updating from a previous version -------------------------------- If you are updating this mod from a previous version, then it is not necessary to start a new game to get the benefits of this update. All you have to do is to exit from War in the Pacific, apply this mod - which will overwrite the previous version - then start the application again. Any saved game that you load will then get use the new map data. Again - if playing PBEM, ensure that your opponent also updates to this new version. Problems -------- If you have any problem with this mod. Please contact me and let me know. I can be contacted by send me a message on the Matrix Games web forums (www.matrixgames.com/forums), user name "Andrew Brown". Notes about previous versions: ----------------------------- Version 1 of this mod has a bug - the Pearl Harbor hex was inadvertantly made an Ocean hex, probably a hangover from my testing. As a result, no LCU could be loaded from this hex. That was fixed in the second version (and this version). Version 3 of this mod also has a bug - there is a problem with the railways and trails in three hexes near Peking: 53,28 53,29 and 54,28. That problem has been fixed in this version.
