Andrew Brown's War in the Pacific Map README file. ================================================= Version 6, 25th April 2006. NOTE: Modified scenarios are no longer supplied with this map package. They must be downloaded and installed separately (see the "Scenarios" section below). This file explains how to install and use my alternative map for the computer game War in the Pacific, which is developed by 2by3 Games and Matrix Games. Description =========== This package provides a completely new map for the game. The map cannot be used with a scenario unless the scenario is specially modified for use with the map. Official scenarios will not work with this map. Also, games started from a scenario that is not modified are also not able to use the new map. There are no scenarios are with this package. Modified scenarions are available separately (see the "Scenarios" section below). Compatibility ============= The map, when loaded, can ONLY be used with scenarios that have been modified to use the map. Installation ============ The map can be installed automatically using an installation utility, or manually. Automatic installation WILL NOT WORK if using the Microsoft operating systems Windows 95/98 or Millenium Edition. In this case a manual installation will have to be used. Before attempting either installation, please ensure that the War in the Pacific game is NOT running. If you have a previous version of this map loaded, you do not need to uninstall it, or unload the map from the game. Neither is a previous version of this map necessary for this version to be installed and used. The version of the ModSelect utility that is provided with this package is able to be used to load previous versions of the map as well as the current version, if it is installed. This is so that players who are still playing games using previous versions of the map can continue to do so more easily. Automatic Installation (Windows NT/2000/XP ONLY) ----------------------------------------------- PLEASE NOTE: Although I have tested the automatic installation utility on my PC, I can not be certain that it will work in all cases on all operating systems. PLEASE let me know if you have ANY difficulty with automatic installation. To install the map automatically, do the following: - Unzip the map package zip file - WitP_Map_Mod_v6.zip - to any convenientlocation on your PC. It does not need to be unzipped in the location where the game is installed, but it can be. When unzipping the file, be sure to preserve the folder structure of the zip file, or the automatic installation will not work (in Winzip this usually means making sure that the 'Use folder names' checkbox is ticked). - In the location where the file was unzipped, run the installation utility, which is called 'MapMod-Install' (MapMod-Install.bat). The utility can be run by double-clicking on it. - The utility should automatically find where the War in the Pacific program is installed. It will then make a backup copy of the official game map so that it can be restored at any time you wish. If there is already a copy of the official map - made during the installation of the previous version of this map - then this step is skipped. - Next, the modified map will be copied to a permanent location, along with the documentation for the map, and two utilities for loading and unloading the modified map from the game. - Scenario files are prepared for the scenario numbers that are or will be used for modified versions of the official scenarios (numbers 101 to 116). The prepration is done my copying the text and picture files from scenarios 1 to 16. This does not create or install the actual scenarios, only the text and picture files that appear in the Scenario Selection screens. Scenarios must be downloaded separately. - You will then be prompted as to whether you wish to load the map into the game or not. If you do, the new map will be available when you next run the game. If you do not, the map can be loaded later using the mod selection utility (see 'Loading the Modified Map' below). - Once loaded, the map can be unloaded, and the original map restored, at any time by using the mod selection utility. Note that this does not uninstall the map, it simply overwrites the modified map with the original map so that the game can again be played with the original map. - It is possible to swap between the original map and the modified map whenever you like by using the mod selection utility. Each time that this is done it is necessary to exit from the game and restart it again for the map change to take effect. Manual Installation ------------------- To install the map manually, do the following: 1) Using Windows Explorer or equivalent, go to the location where the War in the Pacific game is installed, usually "C:\Program Files\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific\". In the rest of this instruction this folder will be called "[Game folder]". 2) If there is already a backup of the official map (in the folder "[Game folder]\ART\Maps_Official"), then it is not necessary to make another backup. Go to step 5, below. Otherwise, go to the "[Game folder]\ART" folder and create a new folder below the ART folder called "Maps_Official" (i.e. "[Game folder]\ART\Maps_Official". The name needs to be correct for the map load/unload utility to work. 3) Copy (NOT move) the following files from the "[Game folder]\ART" folder into the "[Game folder]\ART\_Maps_Official" folder: Jump Map 33.bmp MapRev1024.bmp MapRev800.bmp pickmap1024.bmp weathermap1024.bmp WITN00.bmp through to WITN19.bmp WITP00.bmp through to WITP19.bmp 4) Copy (NOT move) the PWhex.dat file from the "[Game folder]" to the "ART\Maps_Official" folder. 5) The easiest way to install all of the map files is to unzip the zip file into the "[Game folder]" location. This will place most of the files for the map in the right place, except for the utility that is used to load and unload the modified map: "ModSelect.bat" and the file that it requires to run: "Choice.exe". These two files need to be moved from the "Misc" folder to the "[Game folder]". 6) If you have unzipped the file somewhere else, move all of the folders from the zip file, and their contents, to "[Game folder]" making sure that you preserve the folder structure. After this, move the "ModSelect.bat" file and the "Choice.exe" file from the "Misc" folder to the "[Game folder]". 7) The list of files in the package, and the locations they need to be placed, is as follows: From the folder where the files were unzipped: READ_ME_Andrews_Map_v6.txt to "[Game folder]" From the folder "Misc" (below the folder where the files were unzipped): Misc\ModSelect.bat to "[Game folder]" From the folder "mapmod_docs" (below the folder where the files were unzipped): mapmod_docs\*.*" (all files) to "[Game folder]\mapmod_docs\" From the folder "ART" (below the folder where the files were unzipped): ART\Maps_Modified_v6\*.* (all files) to "[Game folder]\ART\Maps_Modified_v6\" 8) Copy the exe file used by the ModSelect utility: If using Windows 95, 98 or Millenium Edition: Misc\Choice.com to "[Game folder]" OR If using Windows NT, 2000 or XP: Misc\Choice.exe to "[Game folder]" Loading the Modified Map ======================== Once the map files are installed, they are ready to be 'loaded' into the game. This is done by running the "ModSelect" utility which is located in the "[Game folder]". This does not need to be done again if the option to load the modified map was accepted during automatic installation - the modified map is already loaded and ready to use. If the modified map is loaded, then the game needs to be restarted for the change to take effect. Restoring the Original Map ========================== The original map files can be restored at any time by running the "ModSelect" utility which is located in the "[Game folder]". If the official map is restored, then the game needs to be restarted for the change to take effect. Note that using the utility to restore the original map does not uninstall the modified map, it simply overwrites the map used by the game with the original map art. The "ModSelect" utility can later be used to once again load the modified map into the game. The "ModSelect" utility can be used to easily swap between the original and the modified game maps if you are playing different scenarios that make use of the two different maps. Uninstalling the Map ==================== If you no longer wish to use the map you can simply run the "ModSelect" utility to restore the official map. If you want to completely uninstalled the map, however, then you can do the following: - Run the "ModSelect" utility, which is located in the "[Game folder]", to restore the official map files. - Delete the following files: "[Game folder]\MapMod-Load.bat" "[Game folder]\MapMod-Unload.bat" "[Game folder]\READ_ME_Andrews_Map_v6.txt" "[Game folder]\mapmod_docs\(all files)" "[Game folder]\ART\Maps_Modified_v6\(all files)" Alternative Installation - Separate Game Installation ===================================================== One alternative for using this map is to install a second copy of the game, then install this map in the second copy. This has not been tested using the automatic installation script, so please do this using the manual method described above. Scenarios ========= Official scenarios supplied with the game, or scenarios designed for use with the official map, can not be used with the modified map. Specially modified or created scenarios are available for the map from my Scenarios web page: http://www.bur.st/~akbrown/witp/scenarios.html Scenarios that are available include a number of converted official scenarios, and some player modified scenarios, including the Combined Historic Scenario (CHS). Map Documentation ================= All of the documentation for the map is located in the "[Game folder]\mapmod_docs\" folder. To read the documentation, open the file "[Game folder]\mapmod_docs\Map_Mod_README.html" in a web browser. Included in the documentation is a revision history of the map, and a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). Alternative Maps ===================== There are two maps supplied with this package - a map without hexes and a map with hexes, which replace both official maps of the same type. The map with hexes is drawn with lighter coloured hexes for ocean areas. There are also several alternative maps with hexes, as follows: - Maps with "World in Flames" style ocean hex dots, plus optional hexside art indicating hexside type in places where the type is ambiguous, and/or control zone boundaries. - A map similar to the default one, plus hexside art indicating hexside type in places where the type is ambiguous. - A map similar to the default one, but with control zone boundaries. - A map drawn with plain black hexsides throughout, as on the official map. These, and other, alternative maps can be downloaded and installed separately, although the main map package must be installed for these alternative maps to be used. Where to get alternative maps and scenarios =========================================== Alternative maps, and additional scenarios designed or converted for use with the map can be found at my website: http://www.bur.st/~akbrown/witp/map_mod.html Problems or Information ======================= If you are having problems with installing, using, or uninstalling this package, please contact me via the Matrix Games forums at www.matrixgames.com, user name "Andrew Brown".
